A new study conducted on mice with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) has revealed interesting and promising results.
Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disorder that affects several organs such as kidneys, skin and joints.
Earlier studies have shown that mesenchymal stem cells have the capability to reduce immune system responses by altering the way immature and mature T cells function. They were also proved to inhibit inflammation.
In the current study, model mice were transplanted with umbilical cord blood derived mesenchymal stem cells (uMSCs) at the National Yang-Ming University School of Medicine.
After transplantation, positive changes were seen in the form of delayed renal function damage, reduced levels of specific antibodies and decreased progression of proteinuria (elevated levels of protein serum in SLE patient’s urine) according to Dr. Oscar K. Lee, one of the scientists of this study.
Moreover, the MSCs taken from a donor were proved to be more effective when compared to the ones taken from the patient’s own body.
